Building Stairs: Code and Safety
The "Rule of 25" is a common guideline: two risers plus one tread (2R + T) should equal between 24 and 26 inches.
Common Standards:
- Maximum Riser Height: Typically 7 ¾ inches for residential stairs.
- Minimum Tread Depth: Typically 10 inches.
- Consistent Steps: Risers and treads must be consistent throughout the flight within a small tolerance (usually 3/8").
